Hungry Girl Goes... In Search of Seasonal Finds!

Tuesday, November 30, 2010

In addition to busting cute sweaters out of storage, edible goodies are one of the best things about the season! Check out some of my favorites...

Trop50 Farmstand Apple

Juice is delicious but also sugary and caloric — we know this. That's why stuff like
Trop50 makes me happy, because it's a less sugary way to get that sweet, delicious flavor, and for fewer calories. This new apple version is just in time. Heat it up in a mug with a cinnamon stick and curl up under a blanket... Fun!!!

Each 8-oz. serving has 50 calories, 0g fat, 12g carbs, 0g fiber, and 0g protein.

Quaker Instant Oatmeal Hearty Medleys Apple Cranberry Almond

This stuff has more than just plain oats — it's a multigrain cereal, people! And with the yummy dried fruit and thinly sliced nuts, you've got a seriously hearty and delicious breakfast in almost no time for under 200 calories. Way to go, Quaker!

Each pouch has 130 calories, 2.5g fat, 27g carbs, 3g fiber, and 3g protein.

PointsPlus value 4

Garden Lites Butternut Squash Frozen Soufflé

This thing rocks. It's a single-serving squashy soufflé with an awesome calorie count that's just begging to be paired up with some turkey breast and veggies to complete an amazing fall dinner. Fantastic!!!

Each 7-oz. soufflé has 180 calories, 0g fat, 43g carbs, 2g fiber, and 5g protein.

Cinnabon Cream of Wheat Hot Instant Cereal

What's better than a hot low-calorie breakfast? A hot low-calorie breakfast that tastes like a sweet pastry, of course! It seems like Cinnabon-flavored stuff is all over the place these days, and this hot cereal is the latest item to get hit with the cinnamon stick. Dig in!

Each packet prepared with 1/2 cup fat-free milk has 170 calories, 0g fat, 29g carbs, 1g fiber, and 3g protein.

Blue Diamond Cinnamon Brown Sugar 100 Calorie Packs

These nutty folks won my heart years ago with their Unsweetened Almond Breeze almond milks, but this new addition to the 100-calorie pack lineup has me falling in love all over again. I especially like the portion-controlled packs of flavored nuts because it's so easy to overdo it when you've got a can of the things in front of you. Yay, Blue Diamond!

Each pack has 100 calories, 8g fat, 4g carbs, 2g fiber, and 3g protein.

Hungry Girl Goes... In Search of Fall Shockers!

Monday, November 15, 2010

Apples and pumpkin are ingredients I like a lot that, if used properly, are guilt-free. But this time of year, it seems like they get themselves into a LOT of trouble! Check out some of the scrapes our buddies have gotten into this season...

Dunkin' Donuts Pumpkin Muffin

A rational human would think that a muffin would be a better choice than a donut. The rational humans – i.e. the ones in charge of the DD Smart menu – clearly had nothing to do with this item. It's got more calories and fat than the seasonal Pumpkin Donut. Ack! This thing is large and out of control.

Each muffin has 600 calories, 26g fat, 83g carbs, 3g fiber, and 7g protein.

POINTS® value 14

Bruegger's Baked Apple Bagel with Pumpkin Cream Cheese

This sounds like a perfect storm of seasonal goodness – but resist! It's just not worth it. The carby calories, the fatty cream cheese... and once you start chomping, that thing's gonna be gone before you know it. Boo.

Each bagel with cream cheese has 500 calories, 13g fat, 88g carbs, 8g fiber, and 14g protein.

value 10

Steak 'n Shake Caramel Apple Milkshake

Ack! This is a tall glass of bummer. Shakes blur the line between drinks and dessert; fruity milkshakes blur the line between smoothies and shakes. But take note: This is pure dessert! This shake – not even the biggest version of it – has more calories than a Walnut Brownie Fudge Sundae at S 'n S! Scary...

Each regular shake has 870 calories, 25g fat, 148g carbs, <1g fiber, and 20g protein.

value 19

Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte

Every year it comes back; and every year, I have to avoid it. The numbers below represent a fairly standard order, but even if you got this with nonfat milk and no whip, it would still have 260 calories. As a person who would rather eat my calories that drink them – this is one to pass on.

Each 16-oz. Grande with 2% milk and whipped cream has 380 calories, 13g fat, 51g carbs, 0g fiber, and 14g protein.

value 9

Marie Callender's Sour Cream Apple Pie

That girl Marie and her pies... I don't trust them! Not only is this a calorie bummer, but even the No-Sugar-Added Apple pie is no bargain at nearly 500 calories. Not okay, Marie! You're better off just avoiding Marie and her super-heavy desserts altogether...

Each slice has 680 calories, 36g fat, 84g carbs, 3g fiber, and 5g protein.

value 16

Olive Garden Pumpkin Cheesecake

Noooooo! It's back! The OG has some good options and bad options, and this is definitely one of the baddies. I wouldn't spend that many calories on a meal, let alone a dessert! And those fat grams? So bad. Stick with the fruity varieties of Dolcini (Olive Garden's new mini desserts) and stay away from the cheesecake.

Each slice has 870 calories, 46g fat, 102g carbs, 0g fiber, and protein n.a.
