Staying Afloat when the Bottom Falls Out

I know I’m using mixed metaphors here, but I’ve been going through some really rough patches. Last Wednesday, my boyfriend of many years and I broke up. On Friday, my father had a stroke while he was comforting me. Although the relationship had been in decline, and my father was never in the best of health, I just don’t know how to start picking up the pieces.

So here’s my request, dear Community. Would you please send me some advice on dealing with truly stressful situations? I’m just at a complete loss, and really need your wisdom.

    Life is challenging you right now. Your relationship was declining; mourn it, identify what you learned from it & move on. Become reacquainted w/ yourself. You have been associated w/ your ex for several years, he has made up part of the definition of who you are. Who do you want to be? Hopefully your father is recovering from his stroke. Focus on how you can help, what you can do. And things WILL get better. Everything happens for a reason, although it takes time to see what it is. :-)

    In the past three weeks I, too, have just experienced a major family crisis that unfortunately is going to be longterm. I'm just beginning to feel a little more in control. As far as following WW, I decided to go into maintenance mode and added four points to my daily allowance. It's helping me to stay in control in this stressful time. Then it's one breath at a time...

    Best advice I can give, is take things slowly. One day at a time. I know that doesn't sound like much, but in the end... time heals all.
