Fat Chick's 10 Commandments of Grits

Written by angyeliz on 7/11/2009 11:02 AM | COMMENTS (15)

It’s insane how many people I’ve come across that eats instant grits on their WW program. Sorry but with me being a southern Fat Chick I cringe. I know to each their own and I know it’s a low point filling option but this Fat Chick just can’t. Now I may not get my grits as often as I used to simply because of the high points but when I do they are the real thing. I mean you can't make fried grit cakes with left over instant! So in celebration of my stand against instant grits I give you….

My 10 Commandments of Grits

Thou shalt not put syrup on thy Grits
Thou shalt not eat Cream of Wheat and call it Grits for this is blasphemy
Thou shalt not eat Instant Grits
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s Grits
Thou shalt only use salt, real butter and cheese as toppings for thy Grits
Thou shalt crumble bacon on top too
Thou shalt not put syrup on thy Grits
Thou shalt not put syrup on thy Grits
Thou shalt not put syrup on thy Grits
Thou shalt not put sugar on thy Grits either

No flailing of the arms, throwing instant grits packages, or calling the mob…it’s a joke, laugh with me here or I might cry! Ok, so I ‘m serious about my 10 commandments.

I am from the South too and didn't know that people put syrup in there grits! That just sounds gross. I do use the instant though. It's just quicker for on the go.

Instant grits won't pass my lips. I had "real" grits for breakfast this morning. I still put butter and cheese in my grits - just less. Syrup - ICK!

Oh goodness! I am with you! There's nothing better than buttery cheesy grits! My husband is from Chicago and had never had grits before he met me. I've corrupted his metropolitan butt.

I have to agree with you. I can't stand instant grits. There is something about regular grits that is just amazing. I absolutely love fried grits and I did put syrup on my fried grits. My family has a holiday tradition of grits and turkey gravy for breakfast.

I love my grits too but I do use the instant grits. I know the real grits are oh so much better but with the fast paced life I have succumb to the microwave grit packs for 2 pts. I would love to put cheese, bacon, and real butter but I don't dare at this point. I love your joke but I don't think the people from the north are going to get it. I went to Maine to visit some friends one time and they didn't even know what grits were and they didn't sell them in the grocery stores there. Poor deprived people; they don't know what they are missing.

You are very funny and write very well...your humor comes shining through, even though you do take your grits seriously :)

Cacox, Dr wants me to wait 2 weeks (Monday I go back to the Dr and I"m hoping to have an all clear for upper body but we'll see. I have an tendon tear and the calf muscle tends to flex while you are moving other muscles which is why he wants me to wait to get it stable. We'll see, I'm crossing my fingers!

Another subject...I understand you can't exercise right now....does that mean nothing with the legs or nothing period....Have you heard of T-Tapp. There are exercises you can do sitting down that will help some without all the jumping around. Just type it into the search engine as they are on the webb.

I absolutely love grits...but I'm with you, they are too many points and I won't touch the instant...in fact the Safeway here tried to sell instant instead of the regular grits and had to eat them....they couldn't get rid of them....lol and now they are back to the original. I still want them every once in a while but have to put limits...

Grits are made from either corn or hominy that's been grounded which you add water that's boil down until the liquid is absorbed. It's like making oatmeal and is a substitute for it but is eaten at any meal, not just breakfast. My friend from Rahway NJ had to be forced to even try it then she ended up ordering a second bowl! They are creamy, rich, and yummy!

I have never eaten grits before (but I'm a northern midwesterner). What exactly are they?
