Hungry Girl Goes...Back to the Movies!

AMC Theatres in California (home of the HG HQ) have started posting calorie counts for their menu items... and the numbers are disturbing. Some of these stats are even worse than I would've guessed. Read this...

There’s been a lot of uproar over the calorie counts on movie theatre popcorn these days, and for good reason. It’s awful. Air-popped popcorn is a really good snack... but the stuff you get at the theatres? Forget it. Note: These stats do not include added butter. Ack!

A small popcorn has 434 calories, a medium popcorn has 664 calories, and a large popcorn has 832 calories.

Other snacks

For the people who aren’t into popcorn (or heaven forbid, want something to go with their popcorn), there are other options. However, pretty much none of those is good either. Don't go to the movies hungry...

  • A hot dog has 629 calories.
  • An order of movie nachos has 1,390 calories.
  • A gourmet pretzel has 480 calories.
  • A personal pizza has 740 – 780 calories.
  • An order of chicken tenders has 530 calories.

When you’re sitting around for 2+ hours, chances are, you’re gonna get thirsty. However, this is not a reason to slurp down a Big Mac’s worth of calories in the form of sugary soda! Diet soda is a better option... but really, water is best.

A regular soda has as many as 444 calories, and a large soda has up to 610 calories.

Here's a shocker (not!). It’s a bad idea to get candy at the movies. Candy's not going to satisfy anything but your sweet tooth (and that growing cavity in your back molar), and chances are, you’re gonna eat too much of it because you’re paying more attention to George Clooney than the number of servings in that box of Milk Duds.

A “regular" size package of candy has 340 – 540 calories, and a “large" size package of candy has 490 –1,140 calories.

I agree with the prevous poster. It's a good idea to bring your own stuff. I also like York mints, which are only 3 points for a regular size candy bar, is really sweet, and takes care of that sweet tooth.

When I go to the movies with my family, I bring a bag of Jiffy 94% popcorn, and 8 oz of grapes or clementies, and a bottle of diet tea or water. My family pig out at the snak bar and I can still eat with them...guily free!! And it is just my idea, but I think that my popcorn, fruit & drink tastes much better then anything that I could purchase behind that counter at the movies.

I'm pleased to say that I've now been to the movies five times since starting the ww program without stopping for junk food...I'll put a water and 100 calorie snack in purse...Sugar free gum works also...

Thanks Lanouvellepie.. Im new here and was looking for an alternative to take to movie theater. I just happen to have a bag of tootsie pops in the cupboard and took two with me, ordered a diet pop and was pleasantly satisfied!

I sneak in tootsie roll pops. They aren't too bad calorie-wise, and if I don't bite, they last a pretty long time.

I always bring my own snacks to the theater. Yes, I am a rule breaker but I avoid making the trip to the concession counter. 94% fat free kettle corn!!

I'll probably get kicked out of the movies for admitting this - but I bring my "big purse" with my own bag of popped 94% fat free microwave popcorn (one point). Beth

A Small popcorn at Angelika Movie Theaters is only 4 points! It is sooo much tastier than regular movie popcorn and well worth it!

Kayalrat2001 - that is a great idea! There's no was I could give up movie theater popcorn all together, but getting a junior size would be a perfect compromise! Thanks! (Hungry Girl - thanks for the blog in general, lots of good tips and a great way to get people talking!)

I was back reading this blog and was actually disappointed in this post. The problem with movie theatre popcorn is portion control and our individual ability to eat one serving size. For me, Weight Watchers is about making lifestyle changes that I hope are permanent. So, I'm never going to eat popcorn at the movies? Yeh, right. At Cinemark, I order a Junior Popcorn: 190 cal, 11g fat, 4 fiber - it's one serving. The small is 3 servings (at 160 cal each). That's my lifestyle change.

Half or perhaps all of my 35 Allowance POINTS would disappear in a hurry after reading those numbers!

Movie popcorn is just a must-have for me. But I save up my weekly points for it and only eat half a small with no butter. It is totally worth the extra calories to me, and it doesn't seem like such a big deal if it's in the budget.

Sorry about the last sentence in my last post. It should read,"with the information, consumers have at least, the opportunity to make an informed choice about what to consume, or not to consume." I use the nutritional information at restaurants to help guide me to healthier choices. Just seeing the numbers for calorie, fat and carbohydrates helps to discourage my emotional brain from ordering what ever it wants.
