Popcorn points confusion.....Help?!?

Written by kurvygirl on 4/29/2010 7:23 PM | COMMENTS (10)

I Love Popcorn!!!! Here is my dilemma:

Orville R's 94% fatfree popcorn is 1 point for 5 cups. So it is 2 points for the bag. I get that.

I decided to purchase the Nordicware Microwave popcorn popper. I thought it would be great to control the sodium...

Why is my own healthy popcorn w/out oil 3 points for 1 cup????? I get to indulge in more popcorn for less points if I use the 94% fat free bags, but I want to make my own.

I like eating popcorn in Volume. Can anyone help me understand why air popped popcorn would be more points if popped w/out oil?

Thanks!!!!!! :-)

My thoughts are: Is Orville R's brand endorsed by WW..or soon will be? It's all about the money. The hot air popcorn is better, in my opinion...and should be the same number of points.

It's only one point for 3 cups air popped, but also 1point for 5cups of the lowfat butter microwave junk. This really doesn't seem right - I think they calculated it wrong? In any case you're much better off to eat the home popped version. I spray mine w/ a little olive oil and add sea salt, freshly ground pepper and nutritional(brewer's) yeast (zero points). Yum.

2T seeds=5c popped. 1c popped w/o oil is 110 calories 1 fat and 7 fiber and that's 1pt. i make my own popcorn using a sapler, seeds, a lunch bag, and the microwave. put seeds in bag, staple closed, nuke 120-140 seconds, open and eat. i also reuse the bag.

I'd have to see the packaging, but it seems 3 points for 1 cup would maybe be for the unpopped kernels instead of popped ones. 1 cup of kernels would make quite a lot of popcorn--maybe 8 or 9 cups? Since I tend to burn popcorn, I buy the bags of already popped popcorn--the last time I made microwave popcorn, the bag caught fire!

I love my air popper! Makes a great low point snack. I then melt one tablespoon of smart balance on top, yummo!

I bought a hot air popper to avoid the confusion. t was worth the $14 to avoid the anxiety of incorrect counting.

Zero points for 1 cup, 3 cups is 1 figured by this link http://caloriecount.about.com/calories-popcorn-air-popped-i19034 . I have one of the Nordic poppers and love it. I spray it with Pam. I am on SFT so it is a filling food on my plan. I put that ff spray butter on it and salt and sometimes Truvia or Splenda.

Thanks for your post. I was going by the points value, listed online in the foodtracker for each of these items.

Are you certain that you're looking at the nutritional value for POPPED popcorn? I just looked up air popped popcorn and one cup is 31 calories. Here's the link: http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/snacks/5356/2 I am a major popcorn lover, too. The Snack Bag size are my go-to snack at work. And everyone knows better than to ask for a bite - I WILL take their fingers off! :)
