My Long Affair with Coffee Creamer

Written by teresaafreeman (teresa) on 5/28/2010 8:11 AM | COMMENTS (15)

I have always been a big coffee mate fan. I loved it. I gave it up when I ditched hydrogenated oils.

One of my true loves. Coffee just didn't seem the same without it. Half and half tastes good but too much cholesterol. Skim milk just don't cut it. Non fat half and half is ok but something is still missing.

I can't stand black coffee.

I took to making my own homemade Greek yogurt and the original recipe called for 1/2 cup of non-fat dry milk. I made a few batches but could taste the powdered milk aftertaste in my yogurt. I left it out the next batch. Oh what wonderful yogurt I had now. No dry milk aftertaste.

Then I was left with this great big box of non-fat powdered milk. I certainly wasn't going to use it to drink. I hated to leave it in the cupboard.

I used the last drop of my fat free half and half yesterday. Today left with black coffee was searching the kitchen for anything to put in my coffee but skim milk. I even contemplating some of my thick Greek yogurt but figured it might curdle my coffee.

Then it hit me that big box of powdered milk in the cupboard. It is non-fat and had to be better than using skim milk.

I was pleasantly surprised. The powdered milk made my coffee creamy. Not quite the same as coffee mate but I would rank it a pretty close second.

My mom says "Teresa, you have been on a diet so long, anything tastes good". After depriving myself of the good stuff, the "better for me stuff" does taste pretty wonderful.

Wishing you a great on point day.

Move, track and stay on point.

I try not to use coffee creamer anymore because of the hydrogenated oils. What has worked for me lately is sugar free coffee syrups. Even my little Spartan store in town sells them. They come in a wide variety of flavors.

Hmm, very interesting find. I am a true coffeemate lover myself. I'm always looking for alternatives, thanks!

I salivate every time I see one of those stupid commercials for creamer, and forget about the grocery store! I pass by the dairy case with white knuckles looking at all the flavors - it is a herculean effort to pass by and not grab Italian tiramisu, chocolate caramel, white chocolate raspberry - whatever!! I found a coconut milk creamer a few months ago (vanilla, hazelnut and regular) that is pretty good. Thanks for the tip about powdered milk - I think I have a few packages rummaging around

How much cholesterol does 2 Tbsp. of half and half have? I can't stand anything else and I have 1 cup of coffee and 2 Tbsp. a day. I thought that I was doing good!

I've tried every single thing you have! Thus far, I've been suffering with the fat-free half and half, but I'm going to have to try the non-fat powdered milk! It crossed my mind once, but I just assumed it would have SOMETHING hydrogenated in it . . . live and learn! Oh, and have you tried having Vitatops with your coffee??????? They are the BOMB!!!

I will never give up on milk in my coffee, just won't do it. I gave up fatty cold cuts, lots of different crunchies (potato chips, etc.), fast foods, but Milk? Ice cream in the summer? a drink every once in a while? Not on your life...

I won't drink coffee black either. I need the milk to change the PH of the coffee. I'm so glad it doesn't have to be creamy for me. Plenty of other things need to be creamy though. So far there just isn't a good substitute for mayo and the way it feels in my mouth. I'm still working on that!

Hmmm....this may be how I manage to boot my International Delights obsession. I moved to the "skinny" but since the points are the same, it's more of a mental exercise. Thanks for the tip!

LOL at your mom's saying! Glad you have found something "better for you" that also tastes good in your coffee. It's the little things that keep us on program!
