National Take-the-Stairs Day (AKA No Escalator Day)

Written by editors on 4/13/2011 10:10 AM | COMMENTS (8)

No, that’s not an actual holiday - but it should be.

I commute through New York City’s Port Authority and it’s packed at rush hour. In one area of the bus terminal, there are two escalators directly next to a staircase. The line of people waiting to use the escalator is amazing – especially when the staircase is virtually empty.

I wonder what it would take for people to use the stairs? Do we actually have to turn off the escalators? (Or maybe we need to convert the stairs into an interactive piano like they did here.)

In today’s busy society, every little step counts. So I implore all the escalator waiters at Port Authority to take the stairs. Get some exercise. It’s good for you. And it’ll get you wherever you’re going more quickly.

I keep all onions refrigerated before using them. I've never had a problem with my eyes tearing, using the chilled onions. it looks a little better without the toast hangiing out of your mouth.

I hit the stairs a few times a day at work. I've found since I've started working out - I have to get up a few times at work and move. So I'm at the top floor and I take the stairs each day at work. Another way to get some excercise in.

I take the stairs from the 1st floor to the 5th floor everyday just for extra activity points. I can now take them without stopping for air; although I'm winded when I'm finished. However, pressing forward...

That's funny. And the very people lining up to take the escalators are the same ones who stand by tapping their foot impatiently as the other person finishes up their last minute on the stair-stepper machine at the gym.

I can relate. When I take the train out of Penn Station, there also a line of people waiting for the escalator which is next to a staircase. I always take the stairs, not only do I have save time but it is one extra way to get some exercise in my day.
