Countdown to the Countdown

I’m a bit funny about setting goals; in doing so, I’m painfully aware of the potential for disappointment. Take my weight-loss goals: For years I’ve had a number in mind. It was 60 pounds less than my start weight. I’ve edged toward that number over six years; never going up, but often staying still for months. I’m about 10 pounds away from that number and have been for about a year now.

It’ll kick in eventually. So I’m setting my sight on a different goal: Running a marathon. I started running about 20 months ago and since then I’ve done six half-marathons and several races in between. I’ve also had a few injuries along the way and I’m currently healing from a nasty case of ITBS on both legs.

I was incredibly lucky to get into the ING New York City Marathon this year, and training starts proper in three weeks. I’m still slightly amazed, when I think about it, that I’m even considering this. My life has changed so much in the past few years, and I think this is going to be a banner year. Within the last few weeks of the year, I will turn 40, celebrate my 5th wedding anniversary (my wonderful, supportive, ridiculously handsome husband, Sean, is pictured with me here), and run a marathon.

If I get to my goal weight in that time? Great. If not, then who cares, I RAN A FREAKING MARATHON. How about that??

Another goal? To blog more. So consider this the countdown to my marathon training blog. Are you planning a big goal this year? Let’s do it together!

    Help!!! I am going to b 50 this year and I am training for my first half marathon you are a great insperation and my problem is that I can't seem to put the 2 together ww and eating for training I have gain 5lb and have 15lbs to reach my goal weight . Getting confused on what to eat before and after training and staying on track. Thank You and you go girl...

    I too signed up for a Marathon this year after being stuck 15-20 lbs away from goal for the past 6 months. So now even if I am not at Goal by my Birthday this year.. I too can say I RAN A FREAKING MARATHON!!! woo woo!

    Congrats to you. I signed up for my 1st 5k and got 5months 3wks to prepare. It took a lot for me to do it because I fear disappointing myself and others but I started thinking it's worse never trying so. Setting small goals may not be so bad.

    Good for you! I would love to run a marathon, but I don't think that's in the cards for me. At best, I could see a half marathon. I am a severe asthmatic, so running for long periods of time have never been my thing, but a half marathon is something I would love to accomplish. Please keep me posted with your training. Good luck and congrats on getting into ING.
