Ah! Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice!

Written by devjfl1 (jeff) on 3/1/2012 3:32 PM | COMMENTS (15)

I have a wonderful orange tree at home that is about 4 years old.

FINALLY this year it has provided a bounty of lovely, fresh, juicy, tasty oranges!

Zero Point Oranges! (if you eat them!)

What happens if you DRINK THEM?

How many points in that 20 oz bottle of Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice?

8 (as in EIGHT Points Plus)

But that's ok, I'll still have a glass everyday or so.

But thoughtfully!

What if the pulp is in your OJ?

I don't understand how I can eat 10 oranges and have zero points, yet drink an 8 oz glass and there are points. Comments?

To careynava1, thank you for your perfect explanation below on fresh vs fresh-squeezed fruit . Now I get it!

It's 8 points because if you extract the juice from the pulp of the fruit your sugar intake is not going to be broken down by the fiber in the pulp so it completely re-constructs how the fruit works.

I too enjoy fresh squeezed orange juice, albeit my oranges come in a sad little mesh bag. BUT yes! I wonder the math that goes into this formula. It typically takes 4 oranges to equal 1 cup (fresh off the tree probably nets a better result). If I enter 4 oranges into the points calculator, it returns 0 points. If I enter 1 C of fresh squeezed juice, 3 points. All agreed it's worth it. I pour mine into a champagne flute for a night cap. Cheers!

I wonder what the difference is? Why 0 pts if you eat it, but 8 if you drink it? Makes no sense to me, especially right off of your tree.

WW has made me rediscover fruit. Every other diet I've been on made me count all the fruit, and it really counted against me. I am loving produce now! We also have oranges from the tree -- my brother in law reached up and plucked one off the high branch for me.

Love the picture. When I see produce like that, I have no problem walking away from all the processed sugar laden treats. Enjoy your glasses of orange juice. I can't think of a better use of 8 ppvs. BTW, how cool is it that you have an orange tree!

I also make my own juice and some of them are 12 pts. I just take it in the pts. It tastes so much better than the stuff you can buy.
